Introduction to SHARE

SHARE Frome is a Library of Things based in Frome, Somerset and has been operating since July 2015. Like a book library, you can sign up as a member and borrow your item for as long as you need before returning for someone else to be able to borrow it. Unlike a book library we have no books, but a grand array of ‘things’: DIY and gardening tools, hobby items, party particulars, kitchen gizmos, camping gear .. the list goes on.

We care passionately about delivering environmental, economical and social impacts. By shifting behaviours from individual consumption and ownership to those based on borrowing and sharing we reduce waste, reduce pollution, save people money, save them space in their own homes and cultivate community.

We have also recently focused on learning about and working with other groups and organisations in Frome as we believe that environmental goals can only be achieved when supported by a strong sense of connection and community.

Role Overview

In April 2022 SHARE Frome became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) operating within a federated charity structure under a national CIO.

Our charitable constitution states that we here to serve the general public for the objectives of:

(1) TO PROMOTE FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN FROME AND THE SURROUNDING AREA THE
PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT BY WORKING FOR REDUCTIONS
IN GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, RAW MATERIAL USE, AND MANUFACTURING WASTE
THROUGH THE PROVISION AND SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY RESOURCE SHARING, RE-USE
AND REPAIR INITIATIVES; AND

(2) TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING AND A CIRCULAR OR
‘REGENERATIVE’ ECONOMY IN FROME AND THE SURROUNDING AREA THROUGH THE
PROVISION OF COMMUNICATIONS, EVENTS AND INFORMATION.

Board members will get involved with the strategic development of the organisation and may take on specific roles to support the staff team. We are specifically seeking people with skills in any of the following areas:

  • Social enterprise governance,
  • Charity governance
  • Marketing,
  • Finance,
  • Fundraising,
  • IT & Web Development
  • A chair of the board who would have extra time and passion to work alongside our manager in driving us forwards.

Role Commitment

This is a great opportunity to make a tangible difference not only in Frome, but further afield too. The Climate Assembly report to Government has just been delivered and recommends that, “people should repair goods and share more, instead of owning all their appliances”. The time is now to take SHARE mainstream. If you’d like to be part of the journey, can you commit:

  • Meet one evening a month for a maximum of 2hrs
  • Be open to offering additional time where you can
  • Attend at least one of our community events a year
  • Represent SHARE across Frome and in local villages
  • Legally and responsibly become a UK charity board member
