How Do Our Late Fees Work?
LatestLeave a comment

In order to sign up and start borrowing, you will need to save a debit or credit card on file, whether you do that yourself when you sign up online or you pop into the the shop to sign up. These card details are kept highly secure on our Stripe system, a PCI Service Provider Level 1, which is the highest grade of payment processing security. Here is a breakdown of how our late fees, non-collection fees, cleaning fees and loss/damage fees work:

Late fees

In order to make the service run as smoothly as possible for all members, any item(s) not returned on time will accrue late fees at double the loan fee for each day that the item(s) are not returned. These fees will be taken either when the item is returned or once the late fees total 120% of the purchase cost. It is therefore very important that you contact us if you feel you won’t be able to get your item(s) back on time. You can either call us during open hours on 07983639611 or email us outside of open hours on [email protected]. This also ensures that we can let whoever may have reserved it know that it is now unavailable.

Need to extend your loan?

First, check nobody else has reserved it after you. If your item is available, you can select the days you need it for. If your item is booked, you’ll have to return it at the time you planned. If not, we will charge a daily late fee. We do this to encourage the items to be ready for other borrowers, who can see via the inventory when an item is due in.

Non-Collection Fees

If for any reason you do not come and collect your item at your arranged time you will still be charged for the loan. This is because by reserving the item you will have made it unavailable for any other member to reserve during that time. If for any reason you envisage that you will not be able to make your collection slot please let us know in good time in order that we can rearrange or release the item back to the catalogue for others. You can either call us during open hours on 07983639611 or email us outside of open hours on [email protected]

Cleaning fees

Rest assured, it’s extremely rare that items come back not cleaned or damaged/lost. Whenever it does happen we aim to resolve the matter in the best interest of all involved. Our policies are in place to ensure a smooth and well-oiled system is maintained for the benefit of all users.

We are unable to provide a cleaning service due to lack of facilities so we are relying on each borrower bringing the item back as clean as possible. If an item is deemed to have been returned in an unsatisfactory state you will either be asked to take it back home and clean it before returning it later the same day or be issued a cleaning fee of minimum £5.

Loss & Damage Fees

We ask borrowers to flag any damage they notice as soon as possible. This kicks off the repair process and also ensures the next borrower is not let down. To do small repairs like unblocking the pressure washer or replacing the jig saw blades, our small team of local volunteer fixers will try to do simple fixes. When an item is beyond a quick fix, we decide whether it is more efficient to have it professionally mended or simply to donate/sell or recycle it. We understand that items will break eventually and we don’t charge members for these types of breakages. However, we do reserve the right to charge for items that are deemed to have been broken by serious misuse or neglect. If this is the case and the item is beyond repair the member will be asked to either buy a replacement or pay the replacement cost.

How Does Our Pricing Work?
LatestLeave a comment

You may be wondering, how do our borrow fees work? And how do we decide the price of each item? Here’s a brief guide to our pricing system!

Price per Day

If you look below each of our items in our inventory, you well see a ‘price per day’. This loan is for a period of one day, whether we are open or not. So if you wanted it from Friday to Saturday, it would cost this price for Standard members.

For 2 days, such as Monday to Wednesday, it would cost 150% of the day fee, for example, a £1 day fee would cost £1.50 for 2 days.

For 3-7 days, such as Wednesday to Saturday, it would cost 200% or double the day fee, for example, a £1 day fee would cost £2.

For anything borrowed for longer than a week, the price will be worked out at the cheapest combination. For example, an item priced at £1 per-day, when borrowed for 9 days would cost £3.50 (£2 for the initial week plus £1.50 for another 2 days).

The above prices are for Standard members. The discount for our other 3 memberships (Subscribers 25%, Low Income 75%, Students 10%) will then be taken off this price.

Example of an item with a display price of £10:Standard PriceLow Income PriceSubscriber PriceStudent Price
Borrowed for one day (e.g. Friday to Saturday)£10£2.50£7.50£9
Borrowed for two days (e.g. Monday to Wednesday)£15£3.75£11.25£13.50
Borrowed for 3-7 days (e.g. Wednesday to Saturday or any subsequent day up to the following Wednesday)£20£5£15£18

Items such as reusable nappies are more likely to be borrowed for longer periods of time and so their per-day price is lower to account for that.

Please note the base transaction fee is 50p. This means that although a £1 item reduced by 75% for a Low Income member would equal 25p, if borrowed alone for one day the price would be brought up to the base level of 50p.

Pricing Formula

We have built a sophisticated pricing formula which considers various factors to output fair prices which are within market value for Standard members (and then cheaper still for the other membership types). Every single item has been run through our pricing formula. One of the many factors included is the condition of the item. Every time an item is checked back in its condition is checked and price updated accordingly. For example, an item used 10 times may have decreased in condition, therefore the price will change to reflect this.

What Memberships Do We Offer?
LatestLeave a comment

Whether you are new to SHARE or are a long time supporter, we want to tell you all about our different membership types! As you may know, we introduced our Low Income and Student memberships last year and have also made a few changes to our classic Standard and Subscriber memberships. Maybe there is a membership that is better fit for you?

When you sign up as a member you will need to show ID when you first come into the shop. This can be a drivers license or passport and you will need to be over 18. You will also need to save a payment card in order to pay for your membership and borrowing, to act as a security deposit and to process late fees. We use Stripe, a PCI Service Provider Level 1, which is the highest grade of payment processing security.

So without furthur ado, here is a guide to our 4 membership types!

Standard Membership

Our Standard membership is now only £1 for a year (down from £15!). This makes joining up, even just to borrow one item for the whole year, well worth the money. Once you have joined as a Standard member, you will then pay the standard borrow price for each item, per day. Perfect for only a few borrows per year!

Subscriber Membership

This membership is the best option for most borrowers and is perfect if you borrow items frequently. Or you simply want to support our cause! When you sign up as a Subscriber, we set up a recurring online payment of £10 every 3 months. This works out at £3.33 per month. You then have 25% off all borrow fees, as well as other great perks like free borrows of the Thermal Imaging Camera and seasonal promotions, such as free borrows on Christmas items in December! If you find that the Subscriber membership is not for you, you can cancel at any time and we will help you find the membership that better suits you.

Low Income Membership

This membership is a great addition for our system, especially during the difficulties of the pandemic, and only costs £1 for a year. If you are currently on Jobseekers Allowance, PIP, Universal Credit or Income Support, you are elligable to sign up as a Low Income membership. We require proof of this financial benefits from the last 3 months. This could be an email or bank statement, and will need to be checked again every 3 months. Once you are signed up you will recieve 75% off all borrow fees. A great way to save when money is tight!

Student Membership

We also introduced this membership in 2020, and is perfect for students over 18. This costs only £1 to sign up, so is good for uni students visiting their family in Frome, perhaps only once or twice a year at Christmas or over the summer. You will need to provide Student ID, an active NUS card (checked every 3 months) and you will then receive a 10% discount on all borrow fees! Great for some camping gear, ready for Glastonbury, or to borrow a sewing machine for your Textiles project!

Join us now!

Sign up online now and start reserving, or visit us to sign up in store! Make sure to bring your ID (drivers license or passport) when you visit! We will be open 10:30am – 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays initially. Then in line with step 4 of the Government roadmap out of lockdown we’ll open 6 days per week: 10.30am-2pm from Monday to Saturday. (See our roadmap)

Assistant Manager Role

Apply by 8th March 2021

We are very excited to announce that we are on the look out for an assistant manager to join our team at SHARE:Frome! We are currently in the process of growing to become an independent charity. In order to do this, we require an assistant manager to help us in this expansion.

We were very successful in the year of 2019 and early 2020, saving around 22 tonnes of landfill waste, 199 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, and 254 tonnes of raw materials. Like many other small businesses, the pandemic was a big knock back to our progress, but despite this, we were able to open in Summer 2020 with a strong comeback. We were sad to close again in January, but we can’t wait to get going again in early Spring. We hope that we can start to make similar and better impacts to the environment and community with the help of a new member of the team.

Introduction to SHARE

SHARE:Frome is a Library of Things based in Frome, Somerset. We offer a grand array of ‘things’ for borrowing, such as DIY and gardening tools, hobby items, party particulars, kitchen gizmos, camping gear, the list goes on. For an affordable cost, members sign up and borrow items for as long as they need before returning it for someone else to borrow.

We care passionately about delivering environmental, economical and social impacts. By shifting behaviours from individual consumption and ownership to those based on borrowing and sharing we reduce waste, reduce pollution, save people money, save them space in their own homes and cultivate community.

SHARE:Frome has been in operation almost 6 years and will be the first of many Libraries of Things to operate within a federated charity structure headed up by SHARE:UK.

We have operated as part of Edventure:Frome Community Interest Company since our inception as the UK’s first high street sharing shop in 2015. We are now spinning out to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) operating within a federated charity structure under a national CIO.

Role Overview

This position will be a permanent contract and initially will be employed by Edventure Frome CIC. This will change once SHARE becomes an independent CIO.

Salary & Hours

10 hours per week @ the Real Living Wage of £9.50p/h. Spread over 2 week days (10am-2:15pm on any 2 of our open days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, plus an hour and half meeting once a week with manager)

We are looking for somebody who has as desirable the following:

  • Retail experience.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Experience of working as part of a team and managing volunteers.
  • Excellent project management skills (organisational, planning, budget and time management).
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships.
  • An ability to manage time and workload in order to be able to deal with tasks swiftly and effectively.
  • A professional and courteous manner.
  • A flexible approach to working weekends and evenings to coincide with events or meetings.
  • Ability to use initiative and to be self-motivated.
  • Decisive, logical thinking with creative problem-solving ability.
  • Hands on and practical approach.

Duties will include:

  • Opening and closing of the library, customer facing, answering phone calls and emails and managing social media.
  • Administering MyTurn, our library computer system.
  • Coordination of volunteers, including recruiting and training new volunteers, as well as our Kickstarter assistant who will be joining the team in Spring 2021.
  • Cleaning to help create a covid-safe environment
  • Library organisation & improvement works

Applications are now open and close Monday 8th March 2021. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] ASAP, providing a CV and a cover letter.

We will be in contact with you to carry out an online interview. Job to start ASAP thereafter (Covid restrictions may affect the start date).

Why are our things priced differently?
LatestLeave a comment

Ever wondered why some of our similar things are priced differently? There are around 15 drills in our inventory, but they all have different prices? Well, we’ve developed a sophisticated pricing system which takes in to account a number of factors, such as the original price of the item, how old it is and the condition it’s in now.

So, if you are looking for something for a quick job and don’t need high quality then go for cheaper. But if you’re after the best quality item then it’s worth paying for the higher quality item.

We also make sure to keep updating the prices with our price calculation system, and monitor the items as they are used and downgrade. So we try to make sure you get what you pay for!

LatestLeave a comment

Festival season is finally here, so if you’re getting ready to camp in the mud, dance in the heat and (most likely) not shower for a week, why not see what camping gear and other useful things we have, to make your festival experience even better?

Not only do we have tents, sleeping bags and mats, we also have cooking gear, camping tables and chairs, lights, rucksacks, a cooler box, and hammocks. You could even get creative and borrow some bunting to make your tent stand out among the sea of other tents!

Festivals are also a time of community and music, so why not borrow one of our guitars, ukuleles and drums to jam around the fire (be careful though). And to keep the kids entertained, we have all sorts of lightweight toys and games, like a hoola hoops, a play tunnel, circus trick set, paddling pool, and more.

The average drill is used for only 13 minutes in its entire lifetime.

What if, instead of buying that drill, you could borrow one from a neighbour you have never met before?

Welcome to SHARE:Frome!

Our thinking is that too much money nowadays is spent on ‘stuff’. Things are used for a short space of time and then spend most of their lifetime locked away in a shed, kitchen, garage etc.

Spend Less, Waste Less, Connect More!

Our aim is to get people spending less, wasting less and connecting more. And by doing this, help people to save money, reduce carbon and waste, and cultivate a happier, more resilient community.

SHARE is a community space for Frome, tailored to local people’s needs. A place for people to borrow objects, share skills and connect with others, in a welcoming and fun environment.
